We had the privilege of attending a "short film screening" for our reading buddies. Our reading buddies in in Mr. Matriccino's 4th grade class created country projects/reports on iMovie. Our reading buddies invited us to their "short film screening" and encouraged us to make suggestions and provide feedback about their short films. We had a terrific time making selections for their iMovies and working with them on their projects. We cannot wait to see the finished product!

I Can Read with My Eyes Shut
We read I Can Read with My Eyes Shut by Dr. Seuss as part of our March Dr. Seuss author study.
We also created our own class book! Our favorite quotes from the book were: "There are so many things you can learn about. BUT... you'll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut." We also enjoyed the quote displayed on the wall in our room, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." We decided that we liked reading with our eyes open because reading can take us places we may never have the chance to go!

St. Patrick's Day
We celebrated St. Patrick's Day in our classroom on Friday, March 15, 2013. The leprechaun left us a letter that morning and we worked on our St. Patty's Day packet. We also had a visit from a leprechaun friend from the class next door. We thoroughly enjoyed our Green Fruit and Veggie Party! We had the opportunity to try fruits and veggies like: green grapes, celery, cucumbers, avocado, edamame, green peppers, broccoli, honeydew melon, green apples, and snap peas. We enjoyed Lucky Charms math! Our favorite part was eating them at the end! We read Bartholomew and the Oobleck and we were able to participate in a science experiment where we collected observation data about Oobleck. Most of us enjoyed touching it, squeezing it, and playing with it in our hands. St. Patty's Day in Ms. Hinnant's class was truly lucky!

Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? and Dr. Seuss's ABC Book
Mr. Nate read Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? by Dr. Seuss as part of our March Dr. Seuss author study.
We also created our own class book! We learned that onomatopoeia is a word that imitates a sound. When we read Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? we listened very carefully for the sound words, then we wrote our own words. We had the
privilege of having Mr. Nate assist us with this activity too! He helped us brainstorm many onomatopoeia words and think of ways to illustrate them too!
Mr. Jay read Dr. Seuss's ABC Book as a part of our March Dr. Seuss author study. We also created our own class book by writing our capital letters, lowercase letters, and finding nouns and proper nouns that begin with our letters. Mr. Jay helped us use the dictionary to find nouns that we could write and illustrate. Mr. Jay assisted us with this activity and many others during his time volunteering with us.
Thank you for helping us make our amazing book Mr. Jay!
We enjoyed finding words and illustrating our work the most!

Our Pet Show
We read Pet Show by Ezra Jack Keats as part of our author study. We also created our own pets using materials such as: yarn, construction paper, paper bags, cotton balls, sequins, tissue paper, toilet paper rolls, etc. We created our pets, drew pictures of our pets, and even gave our pets a name and age too. We introduced each of our pets during the pet show and shared one interesting fact about our pets. We had the privilege of having Mr. Nate assist us with this activity and many others during his time volunteering with us. We know we could not have been as creative and successful without him! Thank you so much Mr. Nate!
Working hard on their pets for the pet show!
Being creative...

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
We celebrated Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Read Across America Day with a visit from The Cat in the Hat! We also enjoyed learning about Dr. Seuss and his habits, reading Dr. Seuss books, watching Daisy Head Mayzie and The Butter Battle Book cartoon. We even wore our pajamas! Our class took the Read Across America Reading Oath as well. We each promised to read every day!
*Snow Day*
Our class had a Snow Day before the snow arrived in Charlottesville. We counted snowflakes and made snowflake booklets. We created our own snowflakes using pretzels, marshmallows, vanilla frosting, and toothpicks. We had a blast! We learned about snowflakes, read poetry about snowflakes and snowfall, and looked at extraordinary snow artwork. We also created snow illustrations and wrote about our favorite things to do in the snow. We had a superb indoor Snow Day!
Snowflake fun!
We followed step by step directions to create our pretzel, marshmallow, and icing snowflakes.
We used a model to create our toothpick and marshmallow snowflakes.
Writing and illustrating some of our favorite things to do in the snow.
